What’s Spirit Day and why is everyone wearing purple?

Visible is going purple in partnership with GLAAD this October 20th. Find out how you can stand with the LGBTQ+ community for Spirit Day.

What is GLAAD?

GLAAD is one of the largest LGBTQ+ media advocacy orgs in the world. Their mission is to inspire cultural understanding, prove that positive representation matters, and work to shatter stigma and discrimination one LGBTQ+ narrative, policy, and marketing campaign at a time.

Ok, so what’s Spirit Day and what’s it got to do with Visible?

On Spirit Day, millions of people around the world ‘go purple’ to take a stand against bullying for the LGBTQ+ community. It takes a village to rise up against bullying. That’s why, for the second year running, we’ve partnered with GLAAD for Spirit Day. Since its inception in 2010, it has become one of the largest, most visible anti-bullying campaigns in the world and continues to gain momentum—garnering significant awareness for GLAAD and its sponsors.

How can I get involved?

Join us to show the LGBTQ+ people in your life—and beyond—that you stand with them. You can do this by:

1. Signing GLAAD’s anti-bullying pledge

2. Putting on a purple shirt for October 20th

3. Posting a selfie on your socials with #SpiritDay and #ProudlyVisible to join the conversation. (e.g. Today is #SpiritDay! Excited to be #ProudlyVisible and go purple for LGBTQ+ youth!)

4. Spreading the word and encouraging others to do the same.

As always, thank you for being a Visible member and thank you for supporting the LGBTQ+ community with us this Spirit Day, and every day.
